Off Grid

Off Grid Viability.

Most of us like the idea of being able to live independent of big service providers and their ever increasing prices, not to mention the pollution caused by traditional power stations. We live in one of the most suitable climates for solar PV implementation and the price of solar power is gradually coming down to a point where every roof in the country should have panels covering every square inch! The dream of being totally self sufficient is ever more real but is Off Grid a viable option?

In short, not quite yet! In all honesty we couldn't sleep at night if we sold people on the idea that an Off Grid system is a wise and financially viable alternative to one tied to the grid. That being said, not everyone has access to a suitable grid supply network and in many cases the costs of tapping in to one can be problematic and expensive. The grid supplies power to out homes via a network of interconnected powerlines which may be above or below ground and may carry voltages anywhere between 415volts and 66,000volts. High voltage reduces power drain when transferred across long distances. When the power is fed to our house the voltage is reduced to a point where it is "safe" to use.

There are many people in Australia who own properties which require special considerations when connecting to the grid. Properties which lie far away from distribution lines, generally running along the existing network of roads, cannot feed standard cabling to their buildings since the power drain would be to high. In order to supply these dwellings with an adequate source of power the provider would have to erect towers etc to supply power at a higher voltage to a point close to the building where standard service lines can finish the job. This means that in some instances, the cost of tapping into the Grid becomes very expensive and an Off Grid alternative becomes more viable.

If you find yourself in the situation where an Off-Grid solution would be appropriate or you just love the idea of separating yourself from the system then please contact us to see how we can help.  We have installed a number of very successful systems and would love to help you achieve your goals.
